Abstract

The present study pragmatically investigates circumlocution in former Iraqi Primer Minister Nouri Kamil Al-Maliki’s political speech. It aims at (1) analyzing circumlocution used in Maliki’s political speech, (2) exploring the purposes behind the use of circumlocution, and (3) showing how he flouts Grice’s maxims and the cooperative principle on the one hand and observes the concepts of politeness and face on the other hand. The present study follows a qualitative descriptive approach as a research design to collect and analyze the data (preexisting data) that are two interviews cited from the PBS and CNN news channels and the Media Office of the Iraqi Prime Minister.
