This article shows that each organization group has instruments of teachings and beliefs and attributes the group as the symbolic identity of the organization to strengthen difference before other organizations. Contestation of religious identity between Muhammadiyah and Nahdhatul Ulama appears in the public sphere, especially in specific religious ritual practices and general issues such as humanitarian issues, poverty, health, and human rights. They synergize, collaborate, and cooperate in the nation.
