The goals of periodontal therapy are to completely eradicate certain periodontal infections, primarily anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria, using mechanical scaling and root planing. If, after therapy, the periodontal abscess is found, oral administration of a large dosage of antimicrobial drugs is often used. Nevertheless, this strategy reduces effectiveness and raises the possibility of systemic adverse effects and antibiotic resistance.
