Abstract

This study explores the features of Sumbanese traditional house as an icon of cultural tourism object in East Nusa Tenggara province, Indonesia, paying special attention to its form and meaning in view of semiotic perspective. The study is descriptive-qualitative. The results of study show that the features of Sumbanese traditional house, known as uma kalada, are unique and specific to Sumbanese culture, as reflected in its form and meaning. In terms of its form, the uma kalada is a stilt house with a towering ridge about fiteen meters with thatched roofs and bamboo walls partly made of wood.
